An article about Motorsport for Life and its' association with the Porter Group

Over the past three years the Bruce Tronell Motorsport for Life Trust has enjoyed the support of Porter’s. This much appreciated assistance has seen deserving families and children experiencing many special events including a fun day being driven around the Hamilton 400 V8 Supercar track just days before the race event. Having the Porter’s trucks participating in this day greatly added to the experience and impressed both children and adults alike.

The Motorsport for Life Trust has also seen the Porter’s trucks used as a float in the annual Hamilton Christmas Parade, on display at the Waikato Winter Show and racing around the track at the Huntly Speedfest. Each of these events are highlights in the calendar for the children supported by the Motorsport for Life Trust, and would not be possible without Porter’s help and support. It has been wonderful to see the support grow from the initial two trucks to the four trucks now used.

Bruce Tronell also spends time visiting the precious children and their families on a one-on-one basis. With the assistance of the trust simply taking the children out for the day, allows the parents a much deserved break in routine and a change in focus for the children.

There is no doubt the events organised by the Bruce Tronell Motorsport for Life Trust are invaluable and priceless to those who benefit from them and would like to congratulate Porter’s for having the insight to come on board with this life changing mission.

Young Drivers Take On Lake Taupo

For a race driver, a 168km endurance event may not seem like too much of a challenge, but when the race is done entirely on foot, a few eyebrows are raised. And that’s exactly what the cream of New Zealand’s young driving talent are set to undertake in two weeks time, for the Bruce Tronell MotorSport for Life Trust.

Jono Lester (Battery Town Porsche GT3); Andrew Waite and Michael Burdett (NZ Formula Ford); Earl Bamber, Mark Russ and Shane Van Gisbergen (Toyota Racing Series); Simon Evans and Ben Dallas (Karting) will tackle what will be quite possibly the slowest race of their collective loves as they prepare to walk the entire 168km circumference of Lake Taupo on 15-16 December to raise money for charity. The money raised will go towards purchasing two transport vehicles for special needs kids around the Waikato area, and the youngsters will be in good company with former Olympic Rower Dave Rodgers and accomplished walker and trust founder Bruce Tronell also jumping on the bandwagon.

The goal of 30 hours to complete the walk is merely a guideline for the boy’s, as Jono Lester – who lies 5th in the Battery Town Porsche GT3 Championship – outlines: “I reckon we can crack it in 24 [hours]. We’re all very competitive guys and there’s no doubt that it’s gonna be as much of a race as we have on the track, but all for a good cause which is great!”

2006 Formula BMZ Asia winner and TRS hotshot Earl Bamber agrees; “It’s great to see so many people getting behind a great cause, and I can’t wait for the challenge”.

For others like Formula Ford frontrunners Andrew Waite and Michael Burdett, there’s a hidden agenda also: “Make no mistake, it’s for a great cause, but for us [Andrew and himself] there’s also the psychological advantage the winner has heading into the next round of the Formula Ford Championship at the A1GP” Burdett said.

Waite is confident he’s up to the challenge; “You’re mine Mike! Give up now while you still can!”

The competitive spirit is going to be at an all time high. Thankfully, the group of youngsters, ranging from ages 15-20, are all great mates off the track too, so you can be sure the bragging rights at stake are a huge incentive. At the end of the day, however, just making it to the finish line will be a huge achievement, and to reach the funding target will make it all worthwhile.

Much of the money raised will be through sponsorship, with packages ranging from $500-$2000. The walkers will be supported by a convoy including two helicopters and buses, along with a bunch of special youngsters for whom this walk is all about. Anyone interested in being involved at any capacity can get in touch with Bruce Tronell on 0272 045 188. To those generous businesses and individuals who have already out their hands up, thank you, and to those who will join them, brace yourself for a race of a very different kind. Taupo will never be the same again.

Waikato Hot Air Balloon Club

  • The Waikato Hot Air Balloon Club was created in 1994 after a group of like-minded people got together to showcase their hobby to the community. The purchase of a balloon followed soon after and with regular flying the club has grown in numbers. Over the last 15 years the club has replaced 2 balloon envelopes and purchased a second complete balloon. The 2 current balloons are ZK-WBC (a personal reg # which stands for Waikato Balloon Club) which is called “Moody Blues” and ZK-RYB which is called Waikato Sunrise. RYB is our newest balloon and is our bold Red, Yellow and Black chevron patterned balloon.
  • Our Club membership has grown to approx 40 adult and junior members. Alongside the 2 club owned balloons another 6 balloons are owned and flown by club members. The WHABC has an active Junior Balloonist programme for 12-16 ear olds where they learn all facets of ballooning. Alongside this the club also has Pilot and Crew training programmes. The club has trained several successful balloons pilots over the years. Our trained crew are also in demand from our international visitors at Balloon Fiesta time each year.
  • Our members regularly participate in the various national balloon fiestas’, these are events organized to bring balloonists together for competitions, fun activities and of course socializing. Many of our members have also participated in international events in various countries around the world (Australia, USA, England and Europe).
  • Over the years the WHABC has been involved in many community based events and parades. One of the regular events we really enjoy getting involved in is the Camp Quality annual camp. Here we take our balloons to the camps and give tethered rides to the children and caregivers. To get alongside these children with our ‘toys’ is quite a humbling experience. The balloons bring a huge smile and ‘feel good’ factor to these unique individuals.
  • In 2009 the WHABC became involved with the Bruce Tronell MotorSport for Life Trust annual charity auction. This was a great family day out with many various activities for adults and children alike. The auction is very well supported and raises considerable sums for the trust to continue it’s fantastic activities.
